James Vernors Birthday
James Vernors Birthday
Thursday, April 11th, 2024 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm.
The Detroit History Club 3103 Commor, Hamtramck MI 48212
Vernors Ginger Ale has been a Detroit staple for over a century and a half; with a combination of nostalgia, taste, and dubious medical advice making it a Michigan classic. Join the Detroit History Club as we explore the man who made the drink, Dr. James Vernor. Vernor returned to his Detroit pharmacy following the American Civil War, and within a year later began producing his signature pop.
In honor of Dr. Vernor’s 181st birthday, April 11th, 1843, guests sip Vernors floats and enjoy birthday cake while they discover how Dr. Vernor’s experiences as a soldier in our nation’s bloodiest war shaped his life, his work, and his legendary product. From military records to accounts written in his own hand, we’ll bubble up the story of the ginger ale king before he made his splash in soda history.
